“I am glad that there is now a law that will penalize employers who refuse to hire workers or lay off workers solely based on the worker’s age. I have long been proposing to remove the age requirement for job applicants. As long as one has the right qualifications for the position and is in good health, it should not matter whether he or she is beyond a certain age or is good looking or not.
Republic Act 10911, or the Anti-Age Discrimination in Employment Act becomes effective on August 16, 2016. This will promote equal opportunities in employment for everyone and support employment of individuals on the basis of their abilities, knowledge, skills and qualifications rather than solely on their age.
We call on concerned government agencies to hasten the Implementing Rules and Regulations for implementation as soon as it becomes effective. This will be a big help for elderly Filipinos who wish to continue to be employed to support their families.”
